Lindsey Graham Lost Both Parents Before He Turned 23 — Here’s What Actually Happened

Over the years, Lindsey Graham has discussed losing his parents in interviews, generally without giving it much thought. Without embellishment, the facts are stark enough. Millie, his mother, passed away in 1976 from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a lymphatic system illness that had a much worse prognosis in the mid-1970s than it does now. She was between fifty and fifty-two years old. Graham was in his early twenties. About 15 months later, his father, F.J. Graham, passed away in his sleep from a severe heart attack. He was sixty-nine. Graham had no parents by the time he was twenty-three.

In Central, South Carolina, a small town in the state’s northwest, the family operated a restaurant, a saloon, and a pool hall. Everyone participated in this type of workplace, and family life was influenced by the business’s rhythms. After growing up in that setting, Graham quickly lost both of the individuals who had created it. Grief in the abstract was not what came next. It was a series of quick practical tasks that would have put someone twice his age to the test.

When his parents passed away, his younger sister Darline was still a minor. Graham was appointed as her legal guardian. He was a young man in his early twenties who had just taken on the responsibility of raising a sister, dealing with the financial and practical fallout from two deaths in a short period of time, and figuring out what to do without the support of those who would typically assist him. The circumstances were challenging in a sense that defies simple explanation. In interviews, he has stated that the experience helped him understand that when you experience a loss of that size at that age, you establish a relationship with duty and responsibility that is difficult to gain in any other way.

Graham soon enlisted in the US Air Force as a Judge Advocate General, or JAG Corps officer, which is a military attorney. Only he could determine with clarity whether his parents’ deaths had a direct impact on that choice. The timing is noticeable: a young man who was parenting his sister and had recently lost his stable family structure decided to enroll in an organization that valued order, structure, and group accountability. That is not insignificant.

Graham subsequently became a Colonel in the Air Force Reserve while pursuing a career in politics, first in the US House, then in the South Carolina House of Representatives, and since 2003 in the US Senate. For the most of his adult life, he served in the military and pursued a political career concurrently, which is uncommon and important to consider in light of how he dealt with the years following 1976.

Lindsey Graham’s identity as a politician and a person is not entirely shaped by the passing of his parents. However, they are an important part of the biographical background that underpins his public career, and they are sufficiently documented—his father suffered a heart attack while sleeping, and his mother had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, both within fifteen months of one another—that the question of what transpired merits a direct response rather than evasive allusions to a challenging childhood.
