Larry David Net Worth Explained: The $400 Million Story Behind Seinfeld, Curb, and a Very Expensive Divorce

Without much financial success, Larry David wrote for television and performed stand-up comedy in New York during the majority of the 1980s. He famously quit his job as a staff writer on Saturday Night Live after one season, but he returned the next Monday as if nothing had occurred. In addition to being humorous, the story serves as a helpful reminder that David’s journey to become one of the richest figures in American comedy was neither quick nor clear. When he and Jerry Seinfeld started creating what would eventually become Seinfeld for NBC in 1989, they did so based on David’s keen sense of humor and their mutual belief that a show about nothing could be something.

Larry David’s current net worth is a result of the equity structure they negotiated. He and Seinfeld initially held 7.5 percent of the show’s backend, or any money the property made in the event that it went into syndication. They renegotiated with NBC and increased their respective holdings to 15% as the program became the most popular sitcom of the 1990s. Purchasing out another share holder who desired liquidity contributed to the growth. In hindsight, it appears to have been one of the most significant negotiations in television history.

In 1998, the year the show ended, the first syndication sale took place. The total revenue from the deal was $1.7 billion. Before taxes, David’s 15% share was roughly $250 million. Most people would easily fall into the wealthy category based only on that figure. However, Seinfeld continued to make money after 1998 through syndication. International licensing has grown.

Sales of DVDs increased during the 2000s. Hulu bought $180 million for the streaming rights in 2015. Netflix bought $500 million for the worldwide streaming rights in 2019. All of it was funded by David’s 15% stake. The total revenue associated with the Seinfeld property across all channels reached an estimated $5 billion by 2026. Before accounting for his divorce settlement, David’s estimated lifetime profits from the show, including salary, syndication, streaming, and licensing, come to over $800 million.

The reason for the discrepancy between those historical numbers and the current estimate of $400 million is the divorce. After fourteen years of marriage, David and Laurie David divorced in 2007. David gave her a portion of his ongoing Seinfeld royalties as well as about half of his net worth at the time, which was between $200 million and $300 million, as he has stated in interviews. Because of this continuous reduction, the divorce settlement continues to influence not only his past balance sheet but also his yearly income. By all accounts, it’s one of the most costly splits in the history of the entertainment industry, but David has discussed it with the same wry detachment he uses for most things.

A different type of wealth was added by Curb Your Enthusiasm, which he created, produced, wrote, and starred in for HBO from 2000 through its twelfth and final season in 2024. Although it was not as structurally valuable as the Seinfeld backend equity, it was still a sizable and consistent revenue stream over a 24-year run. Although the show’s cultural impact was always more specialized than Seinfeld’s, its endurance and the respect it received from critics throughout provided David a creative track record that few television writers can equal.

The $400 million amount that the majority of financial trackers currently credit to David represents the current state of affairs following the divorce settlement, continuous royalties, and the organic build-up of real estate and investments over many years. Even so, it’s a remarkable figure. It just so happens to be significantly less than what it could have been, which is a sort of story in and of itself—the one about how even the biggest financial windfalls can appear differently ten years later depending on what transpired in the interim.
