The majority of people who use Twitter, or X, or whatever it’s called by the time you read this, have never considered the significance of the number 160. The engineers who created the SMS standard decided that a single message could only include 160 characters in the early days of cell phone text messaging. Nobody decided on a major strategic course of action. They just calculated what would fit into the available data structure and arrived at that conclusion. One of the most important communication platforms of the past 20 years was shaped by that technical mishap, which was manufactured by people who were considering phone infrastructure rather than social networks.

The idea for Twitter originated while its creators were employed by a failed business. When Apple revealed it will include podcasting into iTunes, Odeo, a San Francisco-based podcasting firm, was having trouble gaining popularity. This effectively rendered Odeo’s main offering obsolete almost instantly. The group held a brainstorming session to generate several ideas as they looked for something to focus on. One of them was Jack Dorsey’s, a straightforward status update service that functions similarly to messaging all of your pals at once. The group decided to create a prototype because they liked it so much. They expected that most people would access the posts via SMS, therefore they capped them at 140 characters, leaving 20 characters for usernames and routing commands. It was not a design philosophy. It was a practical byproduct of the phone system.

The first message was sent by Dorsey on March 21, 2006: “just setting up my twttr.” It was by no means a historic sentence. However, the timestamp on that post is now recorded in internet history as the instant a format clicked into existence that would go on to be used to announce elections, break news stories, spark global debates, and produce more ambient political noise than any other communications technology. From that initial post, none of that was anticipated. Very few things are.

It was difficult to sell the initial pitch to investors. It’s difficult to win over a messaging service where everything was public, you could only write a paragraph, and the business plan wasn’t fully developed. Twitter benefited from early adopter enthusiasm, especially among the San Francisco tech community, and a growing perception that the short-burst style was superior to other options for real-time communication. In 2007, the team’s breakthrough moment occurred at South by Southwest, where they displayed real-time Twitter updates on plasma displays around the conference space. It was used by conference participants to plan where to go, which panels were worth seeing, and what was going on in real time. During the week of the conference, usage surged. Investors took note.

The constraint itself contains something worthwhile. Instead of being a compromise, forced brevity proved to be an asset. In contrast to longer-form content, it made the platform scannable. You could participate without preparation, making posting low-friction. Additionally, a tweet from a college student and a tweet from a tech CEO occupied the same amount of screen space, creating a sort of equality of surface area. That was also not a deliberate choice of product. It was a consequence of inheriting SMS. However, it influenced the way the platform’s culture evolved and set Twitter apart from the long-form, blog-heavy web that came before it.
