Born in London in 2000, Djed Spence is the son of Jamaican-born Simon and Central Kenyan-born Aisha. In one of the world’s most culturally diverse cities, two very different regions of the world came together to produce a youngster who would go on to become a professional football player. Though few of them result in a Premier League contract, that is a tale that takes place in innumerable homes throughout London.

Spence has not made his parents’ histories the focal point of his public persona; instead, he prioritizes his career as a football player, and his performance on the field usually takes center stage in discussions. However, the context is important, much as familial context is always important for athletes who are raised in mixed metropolitan settings. Both the Jamaican and Kenyan communities have long histories in London, especially in the parts of south London where Spence was raised. The values that these communities typically uphold—hard work, family unity, and caring for one another—show up in the way he has discussed his upbringing when questioned.

Perhaps the family member who has received the most independent public attention is his sister, Karla-Simone Spence. She is a working actor whose credits include Top Boy and Skins, two British television shows that together have given rise to some of the most recognizable young British talent of the past ten years. It’s hardly a typical family dynamic to have a sibling pursuing a professional creative career in a whole other industry, but the Spence household seems to have generated exactly that. From the outside, it’s difficult to determine whether a specific family ideology is at play, but the comparable trends are apparent.

During his loan stint at Middlesbrough in the 2021–2022 season, Spence’s football career really took off, and he was maybe the Championship’s best player. Tottenham Hotspur signed him because of his speed, his ability to get forward from right back, and his poise with the ball. Although loan moves and the usual difficulties of establishing yourself at a team functioning at that level have been part of the adjustment to Premier League level, the underlying skill has never really been questioned. Players with his physical attributes and twenty-something technical ceiling continue to be discussed.

Spence’s generation of players is noteworthy because they are young Black British football players from dual or multiple heritage backgrounds who grew up in London and attended academies at teams that have come to recognize the depth of talent present in those neighborhoods. Even though Spence’s background is clearly unique, the Kenyan and Jamaican diaspora populations have produced elite athletes in a variety of sports.

Aisha and Simon’s reactions to witnessing their son grow from a young child in south London to a professional football player at one of the biggest clubs in the nation are mainly confidential. Press conferences are not how Spence manages his family life. However, witnessing a child achieve at that level in the nation they have chosen to call home bears a weight that doesn’t need to be said out loud for parents who came from other parts of the world and made a life in London.
